With pretty much every major running event cancelled or postponed in 2020, it’s understandable to want to make up for lost time once it’s safe to do so. There’s nothing quite like the buzz of a mass-participation running event, and hopefully they’ll be back on the calendar as normal in 2021.

They’re going to be popular though, especially events like the London Landmarks Half Marathon, which is a rare chance to run on closed roads in central London. The event has used a ballot for entry since it launched in 2018 and we expect the draw for the 2021 race to be more popular than ever.

The ballot opened on the 14th October and runs until midday on Monday 26th October. It doesn’t cost anything to enter the ballot, with the race fee of £57.50 only needing to be paid if you’re successful in getting a spot. The results of the ballot will be announced by the end of November.

Over 74,000 people entered the ballot for the 2020 race, which was cancelled owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The organisers have opted to move the 2021 race from its usual March date to May to reduce the risk of another cancellation.

The route of the race winds around the centre of the capital to take you past as many landmarks as possible, with the whole course set between Westminster and the Tower of London. That means there are a fair few twists and hairpin turns, but the route is still reasonably fast, and having run the event in 2018 and 2019 we’d highly recommend it to casual and serious runners alike.

The 2021 edition will also have a few new features to celebrate the key workers who have been through the ringer this year. The Clapping Tunnel will revive the clap for the NHS and Hero Highway will celebrate the actions of key workers. There will also be a mile of the route dedicated to people lost in the pandemic.

The race is organised by Tommy’s, the pregnancy and birth charity, to which any profits from the race will go. If you strike out in the ballot you might be able to get a spot in the event through Tommy’s or another charity partner, and even if you are successful in the draw then consider fundraising with your run – the lack of running events to raise money in 2020 has hit charities hard.
